Tell us a bit about Buttons Florist and how it came to be.

Buttons Florist has been running for just over 2 years out of my home garage which the space is rapidly outgrowing. It’s more than just a business; it’s my passion and something that I love doing. After finishing my studies, I had a tough time finding a job, so I decided to take a leap and start my own business. The name ‘Buttons Florist’ has a little personal touch – as the youngest of 6 siblings, I’ve always been called “Button” by my family and thought it tied in quite nicely to the brand.

Tell us about the moment you fell for flowers!

For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a love for flowers. As a child, I loved picking and smelling them and always loved seeing fresh flowers at my nana’s sitting on her table. About 5 years ago, I decided to turn this passion into a career, and I haven’t looked back! What I love most is that it never feels like a job to me and it’s very rewarding seeing the arrangements created and making my clients day – It makes it all worth it.

Where are your blooms sourced from?

I source from local growers in North Canterbury and the UFG Auction in Christchurch. This way, I can ensure that I’m getting the freshest, most beautiful seasonal blooms.

Most requested flower combination?
Full colour has been in the hot seat lately, which has been fun, I love seeing the colours all come together bringing a vibrant bold look on the day. That said, classic white and green combinations are always in demand and never disappoint.

Favourite time of the year for flowers?

Spring is my absolute favourite time of year for flowers. The colours, the fragrances, the mild weather – it’s all just perfect. There’s nothing like walking into a room filled with the scent of sweet peas and stock. Plus, spring weather is usually great for photography. We have so many stunning spring flowers in NZ, like tulips, roses, freesia, and daffodils.

What trends are you expecting this season?

This season, it’s all about COLOUR! Bold, bright colours were a hit last year, and they’re definitely sticking around for 2024/2025. They add so much fun and vibrancy to the day and look incredible in photos. I’m also seeing a lot of interest in large installations, grounded floral arches, mismatched bouquets, and bud vases. While I love all these trends, I’m also a fan of the timeless white and green bouquets and hope to see them continue.

What are the various elements you consider when creating a floral piece?

When I create a floral piece, they are always bespoke to the individuals, making it personal and unique. My key elements I consider include the wedding style, colour scheme, texture, and form. I also think about practical aspects like the weather, how the flowers can be reused, and of course, I use my creativity and experience to bring the couple’s vision to life.

Is there a type of flower that has special significance for you, and why?

White Rose which symbolizes loyalty, purity, innocence, eternal love, a new start and fresh beginnings. Which is the perfect flower for a wedding if you ask me!

A piece of advice for selecting wedding flowers?

When choosing your wedding flowers, keep an open mind and make sure the blooms you love are in season. Rather than fixating on specific flowers, focus on the colours you want. Trust your florist; we know what we’re doing and can often bring your vision to life in ways you hadn’t even imagined.
