Introduce yourself! Tell us a bit more about Sophie Roseanna Cakes….
Sophie Roseanna Cakes started up a couple of years ago after working in a range of kitchens & bakeries in Queenstown. It’s just me behind the cakes, emails and social media, but I am incredibly lucky to have such a great support system of friends family to help me along the way – from picking up flowers, grabbing that extra block of butter, or helping with deliveries, we wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for these wonderful humans! I have always had a huge passion for design, so after studying cookery, I decided to study interior design part time where I combined the two passions together for a creative outlet. We love pairing different colours, textures and shapes together to create unique pieces – there is something magic about starting on a blank canvas and producing this elegant, modern cake that really represents your couple and their day.

How did you get into cake making?
Our cake journey started like a lot of other cakers, I bet! At about 16 years old, after a day at school I would head to the kitchen and start baking cupcakes for friends and family to try. This turned into novelty cakes for neighbours down the road and families birthdays – word of mouth spread (thank goodness for small towns!), and eventually my brave cousin let me make her wedding cake. It is truly people like this that trusted us from the start and let us make mistakes – without a portfolio and work to show potential clients, we couldn’t have got to this point!
Most popular wedding cake styles?
Definitely Pearl cakes, vintage styles, pressed flowers, and whimsical fondant petals. Our favourite is for sure the fondant petals – this style creates so much movement and detail – each petal turns out different which we absolutely love!

Your favourite cake flavour?
Citrus pistachio – this is filled with white chocolate ganache & lemon curd. I also love to add strawberry compote to the middle, game changer! Next contenders would be chocolate espresso martini cake with rum salted caramel, or biscoff banana.
What wedding packages do you offer?
We currently don’t offer any packages, but it is something we are looking into! We are lucky enough to be part of a few elopement and wedding packages with some wonderful vendors. Absolutely love working with such talented people!
Guide us through the initial process couples can expect when working with you?
We have tried to make the process of ordering your wedding cake easy so we can get quotes sent out and booked in without too much fuss and stress. Our couples fill out our online wedding form from our website, answering a series of questions ranging from location, guest count, style and theme. We also encourage our couples to send any inspo or mood boards so we can really visualize what you’re after, from there we will customise and give you ideas and inspo to create something that truly suits you and your partner’s personality. After our quotes have been sent through, we can tweak and change to work with you.
For those couples who don’t quite have any cake designs in mind, we work towards figuring out your style – anything from rustic to formal, or a bit of both! – there is nothing better than getting to create something just for you.

What inspires you?
We are inspired by the ever changing designs and trends of cakes. We love seeing the limits being pushed with how cakes are being presented and styled – this definitely keeps us moving and motivated to create more than just your standard cake. It keeps things exciting when you’re designing something that isn’t seen everyday!
What trends are you noticing with wedding cakes?
A lot of sculptural and movement within cakes – such as rice and wafer paper wings, or curved, textured fondant ruffles.
We have also noticed a lot of couples are opting for two tiered cakes, or adding in fake tiers instead to avoid wastage.

The best weddings are….
The ones where our couples choose exactly what they want, instead of following everyone else’s advice or what they see on Pinterest. Every wedding is unique – set your own trend and follow your own style!
What’s next for you in 2023 and beyond…
More beautiful cakes of course! We would love to broaden our destinations and start creating more cakes for couples out of the Otago area. We have been super lucky to have been part of some gorgeous weddings a few hours out of Queenstown. This was such a fun way to meet and work with different vendors and check out new venues – so we can only hope to carry on creating unique and fun pieces for Queenstown and beyond!
