UNAPOLOGETICALLY FLORAL WORKSHOP SERIES \\ FLORAL STYLIST CO

This week we sat down with the ever-lovely Sue Cameron from Floral Stylist Co to catch up on their first workshop in the Unapologetically Floral series. As the landscape of floristry is continually changing, these workshops are set to showcase the latest floral trends with a focus on sustainability. Starting with large-scale freestanding installations and modern, tonal tablescaping, it was a day full of bold, romantic colours and luxe blooms.

Anyone that has worked with Sue before will know that that she is a master of turning inspiration into magic. Alongside 25 years of experience, Sue’s beautifully wild, free spirit is always encouraging of learning and she loves sharing her passion for everything floral. Aside from hands-on learning, artful tips and ending up with armfuls of flowers, some amazing contributors also added to the day in the form of goodie bags and incredible plant based, nourishing food.

We catch up with Sue about the gorgeous details of the first workshop below, NEW workshops, plus what’s coming up in 2021, her inspiration and her own floral journey. If you’re looking for your chance to be neck deep in blooms and flower talk then we think you should read on…

Tell us about what inspired you to create this workshop?

I wanted to create a fun workshop that would inspire anyone who loves flowers. Whether they are already in the floral industry or just have a passion for all things floral – for those who wanted to just dive in at the deep end and get deep into flower design and technique.

What did your floral loving attendees learn?

My gorgeous attendees learnt how to create a freestanding installation of florals building from the ground up in the first half of the day and in the second half they learned to style a table and then make the flowers to work with that styled table. We used on trend floral and design led ideas to create 4 ultra modern looks.

What was your favourite part of the event?

Watching what the attendees make and guiding them in the right direction. Seeing the lightbulb go off and  how good they feel when they create something amazing is always a joy for me. .

What do you enjoy the most about running the workshops and will there be more in 2021?

I love the new flower friends we make and being around people who are as addicted to florals as I am. Sharing everything floral in our lives and bouncing ideas around. There are 2 more classes so far and we will be adding more. We have Installations on 30th May and Artful table design on 23rd May.

Tell us about the moment you fell in love with flowers?

I have always loved them for as long as I can remember. One special thing I can remember is my Grandfather showing me how a snapdragon floret actually snaps like a little puppet face really made me fall in love with the magic of flowers. My time in Australia (8years) of floristry was also amazing. The diversity and quality of flowers are totally off the charts and so much more accessible than in New Zealand it really ignited my passion even more.

What has been the biggest inspiration on your own floral journey?

Constantly changing fashions and colour palettes really get me going. Sculptural floral installations are what we are getting known for and there is a huge movement all over the world as floristry becomes recognized as an art form and people are appreciating the creative boundaries being pushed more and more … I am all about it !
